About Us

The Pacific Health Foundation is composed of physician specialists in hepatology and gastroenterology from San Jose Gastroenterology and Stanford University Medical Center and full-time staff and volunteers from several colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, and beyond.

Our organization also collaborates with gastroenterologists from local clinics to perform investigative studies and outreach events.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors are Dr. Son Do, Dr. Khoa Lam, Long Nguyen, Dr. Mindie Nguyen, Filomena Simpson, and Dr. Huy Trinh.

Khoa Lam, M.D.

Dr. Lam graduated from Stanford University in 2005 and served as a study coordinator and continuing medical education (CME) coordinator for PHF in 2005-2006. As a medical student at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Dr. Lam served as a research and database coordinator for the San Francisco Hepatitis B Collaborative to establish two student-run clinics as part of San Francisco’s Hep B Free Campaign. Dr. Lam graduated from UCSF School of Medicine in 2010 and is currently doing his residency in Internal Medicine at UCSF.

Long Nguyen

Mr. Nguyen graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2007 and has been with the Pacific Health Foundation since its inception, first as a clinical research intern before serving as a clinical research coordinator. He is currently a medical student at Stanford University pursuing an M.D. in medicine and an M.S. in epidemiology.

Mindie H. Nguyen, M.D., M.A.S.

Dr. Nguyen graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biological sciences from the University of California, Irvine. She received her medical degree from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and her master’s degree in clinical research at UCSF.

Primary research interests include the molecular epidemiology and pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma with an emphasis on disease determinants, diagnostic and screening tests, and ethnic differences, and the epidemiological and clinical behaviors of viral hepatitis, particularly in hepatitis C patients with novel genotypes and in under-studied populations.

She is a board-certified gastroenterologist and is currently Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Stanford University Medical Center.

Filomena Simpson

Mrs. Simpson is a licensed vocational nurse and has worked in gastroenterology for over 30 years. She started as a study coordinator and is currently an administrative assistant for PHF.

Dr. Huy Trinh, M.D.

Dr. Trinh graduated cum laude with a BS degree in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley and received his medical degree from Northwestern University School of Medicine. After his internal medicine residency training at VA Wadsworth/UCLA, he completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of California, Irvine. 

His primary research interests include viral hepatitis B and C and liver cancer outcomes, in particular clinical drug trials for patients with hepatitis B and C. He has been in practice in San Jose since 1991 and is the founding member of San Jose Gastroenterology. Dr. Trinh is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine.
